Abstract: Hβ zeolite was modified with seven organic acids. Their catalytic perform ance in dehydration of 2-(4′-ethylbenzoyl)-benzoic acid ( BEA ) to 2-ethylanthraquinone (2-EAQ) was studied. Hβ zeolites modified with cit ric acid (Hβ-c), tartaric acid (Hβ-t), malic acid (Hβ-m), and propanedioic acid (Hβ-p) showed high catalytic activity. The BEA conversion and 2-EAQ sel ectivity were both up to 95.0%. A suitable amount of acid sites with proper aci d strength is needed for the reaction. Excess or deficiency of concentration and strength of acid sites would result in dehydration between molecules or lower the catalyst activity.
