Abstract: Brønsted-Lewis acidic ionic liquids 1-(3-sulfonic acid)-propyl-3-methylimidazole chlorozincinates ([HO3S-(CH2)3-mim]Cl-ZnCl2) were synthesized, characterized, and used to catalyze the dimerization of rosin. [HO3S-(CH2)3-mim]Cl-ZnCl2 (molar fraction of ZnCl2 x > 0.5) is both Brønsted and Lewis acidic, and [HO3S-(CH2)3-mim]Cl-ZnCl2 (x = 0.64) has good catalytic properties. The product can be easily separated from the reaction mixture, and the ionic liquid catalyst has good reusability.
