Abstract: Recent progress made in the Institute of Coal Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in the field of coal gasification using an ash agglomerating fluidized bed gasifier together with the gas cleanup challenges and the synthesis of liquid fuels (hydrocarbons, higher alcohols, and dimethyl ether) from coal-based syngas were briefly summarized.

Key words: coal to liquid fuel, coal gasification, hot gas cleanup, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, higher alcohols, dimethyl ether
