    Highly dispersed vanadium oxide supported on mesoporous SBA-16 (VOx/SBA-16) with a cubic (Im3m) pore structure prepared by impregnation method shows excellent catalytic activity for hydroxylation of benzene. Nanostructured VO4 species and crystallites of V2O5 play a key role in the catalytic reaction.

    Uniform ceria nanospheres with an average size of about 320 nm were prepared by a urea-hydrothermal route. The ceria nanospheres present a core-shell configur ation constructed by nanoparticles and nanosheets and predominantly expose the (111) planes. The ammonia bubble produced by urea hydrolysis plays a cruc ial role in determining the spherical structure. The redox properties and catalytic performance of CeO2 nanospheres rely on the unique stru cture closely.

    Nanoparticle (NP) catalysts weaken chemical bonds upon adsorption of A and B rea ctants, but unsupported or supported NPs still require electromagnetic (EM) ener gy to complete the reaction. Quantum electrodynamics (QED) provides this EM ener gy by inducing the absorbed thermal kT energy of A and B molecules accumulat ed i n collisions with the NPs to be emitted as vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation, t he product AB forming by QED induced VUV photolysis.

    The effect of ZnO nanoparticle size on their catalytic activity in CO ox idation was studied. Nonmonotonic correlation between the CO oxidation rate and t he size of nanoparticles in a very narrow range of 2.0-2.3 n m was revealed.

    We synthesized the novel chabazite-clay composite for better oilsands bitumen u pgrading via assembling chabazite on the kaolin surface under alkaline condition s. The chabazite-kaolin composite has such a unique exterior surface, accessibl e to large hydrocarbon molecules, that it could moderate oilsands derived bitume n upgrading reaction with high performance of contaminant (sulfur, nitrogen, ni ckel, and vanadium) removal.

    Ceria with different morphology was prepared by a hydrothermal method. The coll oidal deposition method selected to prepare the catalysts allowed the isolation of the support effect on the catalytic activity and excluded the influence of go ld particle formation by their deposition on the support. The activity of the Au /CeO2 catalysts for CO oxidation was investigated.

    The methanol electrocatalytic oxidation performance of Pt/RuO2/CNTs nanocata lyst is strongly dependent on the RuO2 content. The specific capacitance change of R uO2/CNTs is the main reason for the change of methanol electrocatalytic activi ty . The Pt/RuO2/CNTs catalyst with 15%Pt and 9.5%RuO2 has the best methanol e lectrocatalytic oxidation activity.

    Fishbone carbon nanofibers (FCNFs) from different carbon sources (CO, CH4, and C2H4) possess similar fishbone structure but quite different physicochemical properties. The supported Pd catalysts (0.5%) present various activity for tere phthalic acid (TA) hydro-purification. It is believed that rather than the grap hene arrangement,the synergic support effect dictates the Pd dispersion on FCNF and the consequent catalytic activity.

    Molecular dynamics simulation was carried out to investigate the behavior of (5,5) and (10,10) armchair carbon nanotubes in water under tensile loading. The Young’s modulus of nanotubes in water remains the same as that in vacuum. However, the tensile stress of nanotubes in water is less than that in vacuum.

    The FIRE algorithm combined with the simulated annealing method w as firstly employed to find the structures of (CeO2)n (n=1-5) with g lobal minimum potential energy. These structures were further refined by the density functional theory simulation in order to deeply understand their structu ral properties.

    Nanoindentation is one of widely used tools for examining mechanical propert ies of metal thin films. In this study, molecular dynamics simulation was e mployed to investigate the nanoindentation behavior of a Cu(100)/Cu(110) bilayer ed thin film. The detailed deformation structure of the bilayered thin film was observed to be similar to that of its ingredients and correlated very well with the load-displacement response.

    Nano-rod shaped OMS-2 was synthesized by the sol-gel method with a nonionic s urf actant MPEG as the structure-directing agent. The OMS-2 showed excellent catal yt ic performance for DME combustion and could convert it to CO2 and H2O at a l ow temperature. The lattice oxygen played a key role in DME combustion.

    A BET adsorption apparatus with a high precision differential pressure sensor, which small laboratories can afford, for the use of measurement of internal diffusivity and micropore size distribution (mPSD) of microp orous powders is described. The apparatus is based on gas uptake rate measurem ents and adsorption manometry for measuring internal diffusivity and mPSD.

    Single/double/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (S/D/MWCNTs) were selectively syn the sized on a MgO-supported iron catalyst by chemical vapor deposition from methan e . The selectivities for SWCNTs and DWCNTs on 0.5%Fe/MgO and 3.0%Fe/MgO were over 90 % and 75%, respectively. This provides a controlled way to selectively synthesiz e CNTs on a large scale in a fluidized bed.

    In order to prepare stable and reusable heterogeneous catalysts, palladium nanop articles were supported on platlet carbon nanofiber (pCNF), fishbone carbon nano fibers (fCNF) and tubular carbon nanofibers (tCNF). It was found that the Pd loa ding and particle size as well as the amount of Pd leaching during the Heck reaction were strongly related to the potential difference between the CNF surf aces and the palladium colloids. Pd leaching in the Heck reaction can be signifi cantly suppressed by increasing potential difference between the CNF surfaces an d the palladium colloids during catalyst preparation. The Pd activity decreased exponentially with the Pd size.

    New catalytic membranes have been realized by the heterogenization of the photoc atalyst decatungstate (W10) in membranes made of the partially fluorinated polyv inylidenefluoride (PVDF) and the perfluorinated polymer Hyflon. The photocatalyt ic composite membranes are characterized by different and tuneable properties de pending on the nature of the polymeric micro-environment, in which the catalyst is confined.

    A novel bimetal mesoporous molecular sieve Mn-Ti-MCM-41has been studied for the epoxidation of styrene with H2O2 under microwave irradiation. The result s of HRTEM, SEM-mapping of Mn and Ti, and 29Si MAS NMR revealed t hat the materials exhibited a typical hexagonal arrangement of mesoporous struct ure and uniform dispersion of Mn and Ti in MCM-41 framework.

    Nanosized colloidal platinum was prepared by reduction of H2PtCl6 in the pre sence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in a methanol-water mixture by refluxing. T he sample showed high catalytic activity for acetylene hydrogenation. The PVP mo lecular mass, their concentration, and reduction time have effects on Pt particle size and catalytic activity.

    The main role of Au in Pd-Au bimetallic catalysts for vinyl acetate(VA) synthes is is to break contiguous Pd atom ensembles at the surface into isolated Pd mono mers. The absence of contiguous Pd sites thus significantly reduces the formati on of combustion by-products and suppresses the poison effects of CO, thus enha ncing the VA formation selectivity and activity.
